don't worry, i know plenty of Tories who are also humans too, i even share DNA with some of them. sweeping generalisations are the currency of internet discussions about politics, it's all good fun, and i certainly didn't mean any offence towards you, your mother, etc. being of northern extraction i'm very familiar with the miserable Labour-voting gits you describe (who vote more out of tribal instinct than anything else, i suspect).

anyhoo, i never intended to get into a discussion about Lab vs Con since i think they're both terrible: more that i was bemoaning what feels like a shift to the right in general public mood / discourse. it feels like the foreigner hating, tax resenting, "it's political correctness gone maaaad" brigade have managed to move all conversation entirely onto their terms. as a card-carrying liberal i feel boxed in, cornered, threatened, miserable, let down.

Of course, the Labour party's core voters are pillars of liberal wisdom, not miserable Northern gits who have just as much bitterness about gays, Muslims, women, the disabled, the unemployed, foreigners, the welfare state, the NHS, the idea that one should pay one’s way in society, et-bloody-cetera as their right-wing counterparts. We can all find extremes, though it's a lazy way to go about proving a point. My mother votes Tory, and a nicer woman you can't hope to meet. She doesn't spend her life moaning about the gays and the immigrants, etc. Indeed, she's had to have words with my Grandfather - a staunch, old-school, blood 'n' thunder, Yorkshire Labour supporter - about his unpleasant rascism. You're tarring one side as 'good' and one side as 'evil' is the same sort of simplistic, fourth-form bullshit the Yanks get up to. There are throroughly decent Tories, Socialists, Liberals, etc. Dear God, let's not get into the black and white way of thinking that has led to the USA's right seeing its left as evil, and vice versa.

if you want to connect with the modern Tory party's core vote, chat to the lovely folks over here for a few days. just don't mention the gays, the muslims, women, the disabled, the unemployed, foreigners, the welfare state, the NHS, the idea that one should pay one's way in society, et-bloody-cetera.
I'm over 25, yet have a long enough memory to not paint the Tory years as one long decent into fascism. There were bad things that happened, but also good things. We entered the 80s as a washed-up, redundant, strike-ridden, bankrupt mess. We left 1997 with the strongest economy in Europe (so good, in fact, that Brown based his entire economic policy on Conservative spending plans - the first good idea Labour were to steal).

You'll also find that a lot of voters over 45 would rather eat their own legs than vote Labour in again after the 70s - which is as absurd as thinking the Conservatives are the same beasts they were in 1987. And lest we forget that the resurgence in interest in the Tories is not the exclusive realm of the under-25s who 'know no better'. People of all ages are turning away from Labour because they've realised they're incapable of doing anything other than over-spending and over-controlling. The last ten years have seen law after law after law that has infringed on our civil liberties - laws that go way above and beyond the stupid Criminal Justice Act (a desperate, knee-jerk piece of legislation of a moribund party that should not have been re-elected in 1992).

Pretending that we've been living in a golden age that will be reversed if a different party comes to power is revisionist and dumb, frankly. Do you want Labour to go on for so long that they are as despised as the Major government was?

yeah, the gratuitous F word does bring us dangerously close to proving Godwin's Law, but the Tories ARE cartoonish right-wing bastards, as alluded to by Theresa May when she said at that conference speech that they were still perceived as "the Nasty Party". they're now working hard to hide all the Winchester-dwelling blue-rinse racists and Major Bufton-Tufton armchair imperialists under the carpet, but voters over the age of about 25 ought to have long enough memories to know it's a total fucking con, the mightiest turd-polishing enterprise of all time.

> The fascists set out to control all aspects of people’s lives. That has never been a Tory policy.

The Tories are dictatorial? Ho ho! Still smoking fags outside are you? Been arrested for a 'public order' offence recently (such as back-chatting a copper)? Liberal policies? What would those be? Invading foreign countries, lying to parliament and the country, compulsory DNA tests and retention of that DNA for anyone arrested (even if no charges are brought), denying the right to protest outside parliament, imprisonment without charge, cameras watching your every move, the introduction of compulsory ID cards? Lurch to the right? Suddenly? Try from 1997, when nanny-knows-best New Labour came in and started telling us how to live our lives.

And as for fascist comparisons, get a fucking grip. The fascists set out to control all aspects of people's lives. That has never been a Tory policy. In fact, I think you'll find that a government thinking it knows what's best for its population is a Labour speciality. But hey, you keep believing they're great whilst painting the right-wing as cartoonish Hitlers. And then go and have a fag on the pavement and read about who's dead in Iraq this morning. Idiot.

The lurch to the right of which you speak is them trying to look like they have been listening to people, which they haven't, because they just realised the masses won't vote for them unless they (the govt) DO AS THEY'RE FUCKING WELL TOLD by the man in the street.

Once again Jon you've hit the bloody nail on the head

In conversation yesterday I made the same point about piss pots draining cans at busstops, outside tube stations (I predict litter) and being twice as intoxication on public transport. I myself carried out an act of wilful vandalism on a tube train last week (it was mentioned) and I wasn't in charge of any booze, merely full of it...

I blame a lot of this right wing-ness on those free papers circulating round London by the way. I'm sure Boris wouldn’t have got in if it wasn't for their perpetual Ken bashing and bigging up the blonde bastard, worryingly this attitude is filtering down to the future electorate.

yep, the lurch to the right is very very depressing. as for banning booze on the Tube, it misses the point that people get drunk before they get on a train, not during the 5 or 10 minutes they actually spend on the Circle line or whatever. (the wanker i had to deal with yesterday teatime was a case in point: pissed, overbearing and obnoxious, but not actually carrying a drink so clearly a fine upright citizen).

all this means is, the bad drunks will carry on the way they always have on the underground, but me and the wife can no longer drink a cheeky beer on the Picadilly line on the rare occasions we get babysitters and venture out into town.

i'm getting really, really depressed about all these empty gestures being passed off as politics. Labour have pissed away a decade of opportunity, pandering to the worst elements of small-minded illiberalism, now their Daily Express reading chums have turned around and bitten them on the arse, leaving a disillusioned and alienated left and a hyper-sensitive, overly demanding right wing lunatic mainstream that's used to getting pretty much whatever it wants by threatening to bring the Tories back in. i thought the UK's flirtation with fascist fuckwittery reached its high-tide with the (thankfully temporary) rise to fame of UKIP and that glowing clown penis Kilroy, but now it feels like that was just the warm up for something longer-lasting and far worse.

sorry to post a rant but i no longer maintain my own weblog...no idea what the "day of reckoning" is all about as i'm just an internet person, but good luck whatever it is...
